As parents, keeping our kids healthy is always top of mind, but sometimes issues like bladder dysfunction can sneak by unnoticed. Spotting the signs early is key to avoiding bigger problems later on.

In this blog, we’ll break down five clear signs that could mean your child is dealing with bladder dysfunction—and guide you on what steps to take next!

1. Frequent urination

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) notes that frequent trips to the bathroom can be a sign of bladder dysfunction [1]. Here’s how it might show up in your child’s day-to-day life:

  • During the Day: Frequent bathroom visits can disrupt activities like school, playtime, and socialising. (Need tips on handling incontinence at school? Check out our guide for parents and teachers here!)
  • At Night: If your child is waking up constantly to use the bathroom, it could be messing with their sleep routine.

While an occasional bout of frequent urination might not be a big deal, ongoing symptoms are worth a conversation with your healthcare provider. Early evaluation can make a big difference!

2. Sudden urges and leaks

Another thing to watch for is if your child feels like they have to go right now and ends up having accidents because they can’t make it to the bathroom in time.

Research says this could mean they have an overactive bladder, which can really get in the way of their day and cause some embarrassing moments, especially for older kids.

If this sounds familiar, it’s a good idea to look into it!

3. Persistent bedwetting

Bedwetting, or nocturnal enuresis, is another sign of possible bladder issues in kids. It’s totally normal for younger children still mastering toilet training, but if it’s still happening after age five or six, it might be time to dig a little deeper.

Keeping tabs on your child’s nighttime habits and chatting with a healthcare professional can help catch any issues early.

If your child is dealing with urinary incontinence, our Nundies Youth Pants for kids and teens are here to help!

Designed for children from age 4 up to 15, they look and feel like regular underwear, are dermatologically tested, and rapidly absorb liquid to keep your child dry and comfy all day long.

4. Bladder discomfort or pain

Kids with bladder issues might also mention pain or discomfort when they pee. It could feel like:

  • A burning sensation
  • A sharp pain
  • Tummy aches
  • Even a fever

These symptoms can also point to a urinary tract infection (UTI) or bladder irritation. If your child is dealing with any of this, don’t wait—reach out to their healthcare provider ASAP to figure out what’s going on.

5. Changes to urine

Finally, don’t forget to keep an eye on any changes in your child’s urine—both in colour and smell. Here’s what to look out for:

  • Darker or unusual colours
  • A cloudy appearance
  • A stronger or odd smell

These changes could mean there’s an infection or another bladder issue.
Catching signs of bladder dysfunction early is so important for getting your child the help they need.

By staying alert and acting quickly, you can help prevent bigger issues and keep your little one happy and healthy.

If you notice anything off, don’t hesitate to call their doctor—it can make all the difference!
